Port Orange Family Days
Port Orange Family Days is the most celebrated events of the city! . Port Orange Family Days is worthy of special attention and praise, given its unique contributions to the Community.
The Mission of Family Days is: "To bring our Community together in the spirit of family and friends, and, to broaden the awareness to the benefits and quality of life that Port Orange has to offer."
Al Bell, a Port Orange resident and volunteer, presented his "Block Party" idea to the then Mayor Allen Green and City Manager Ken Parker. Once the idea caught on the event was coined "Family Days" and the residents of Port Orange would come together for fun and a chance to get to know one another. This included school district employees, Port Orange City employees, interested Port Orange residents and business owners. After a year of initial planning the Mayor kicked off the first Port Orange Family Days on September 26, 1996. Among the 15,000 people who attended the festival, Florida Governor Lawton Chiles served as the City"s honored guest.
As the years went by, the crowds grew and many features and themes were added and the community expo expanded from 20 exhibitors to more than 200. In 1997, the theme was "Celebrate the Family". Entertainment was provided by our very own local school bands, choruses and dancers. Also, the first Annual Miss Port Orange Leadership Contest was held and recognized scholarship and community service.
In 2005, Port Orange Famly Days celebrated their 10th Birthday. Many features were added such as Dessert Cook off sponsored by the Inlet Harbor, Dignity Memorial and WNDB. Famuly Days had the beginnings of a small "home show" with "how-to" seminars, great entertainment, hot air balloons, a parade with floats, and a fun-filled Carnival with fireworks over the lake! There was something for everyone!
